Queenscourt Hospice has been in the national news earlier this year after hospice bosses revealed that without urgent intervention, the charity could be forced to close its doors for good in just 18 months.
The hospice, which was officially opened by Princess Diana in 1992, is currently facing the steepest financial battle in its history. Operating with a staggering £2 million deficit for the past two years, the vital local charity has been pushed to the breaking point.
While many people think that hospice care is completely funded by the government, the truth is far more precarious. In 2025, just 24% of Queenscourt’s funding came from the NHS, with the remaining 76% raised through the generosity of local people.
Rising energy bills, essential staff salary increases to match NHS pay scales, and a dramatic drop in “legacy” donations (money left in wills) have created a perfect storm for the organisation. While the hospice is lobbying for the NHS to increase its contribution to the national average of 40%, they have been told that help might not arrive until 2029.
Queenscourt does not have until 2029. It has 18 months.
Dr. Clare Finnegan, Executive Medical Director, said: “If we do not take measures to cut our costs, Queenscourt will be forced to close. This is not an outcome the charity is willing to accept, and we must now take urgent action if Queenscourt is to survive.
“The support we’ve already seen from our community has been incredible, but we urgently need more help. We are asking people to support Queenscourt in any way they can — through donations, volunteering, fundraising, or leaving a gift in their will. Every contribution will help us continue to provide vital end-of-life care and support, and to protect the future of our hospice.”
How to Support: Queenscourt Open Garden 2026
Residents from across Sefton are being invited to show their support by attending the upcoming Queenscourt Open Garden event.
The event takes place next weekend on Saturday 20th June, from 12pm to 4pm, at Queenscourt Hospice on Town Lane. Visitors can enjoy a summer afternoon in the hospice grounds with a variety of activities and stalls planned.
The afternoon includes:
- Garden strolls through the hospice grounds
- Plant stalls and gift items
- Tea, cakes and refreshments
- Games, prizes and entertainment
- Local shopping opportunities
- A special visit from mascot Queenie
Organisers are encouraging people to bring along family and friends to enjoy the afternoon and help raise much-needed funds to keep the service running.
