Southport’s Great Himalayas raises £2,600 for Nepal relief

Great Himalayas Nepalese Restaurant on Lord Street in Southport has raised £2,600 to aid disaster relief following catastrophic flooding in northern Nepal.

The community fundraising evening, held on Tuesday 8 September, saw the local favourite donate 100% of its food sales and a portion of drink sales directly to the Nepal Flood Relief Fund.

The event was organised after tragedy struck the Rasuwa district in northern Nepal on Wednesday 26 August. Early morning flooding, triggered by a glacial collapse and debris flow, devastated entire communities across Timure, Syafrubensi, and Betrawati. Several members of the Great Himalayas staff originate from the area, with some losing their family homes and relatives in the disaster.

To support the relief effort, the entire restaurant team volunteered their time free of charge to run the evening. The initial total was further boosted by £300 donated directly by staff members and a matching £300 contribution from the business itself.

Prakash Shahi, owner of Great Himalayas, expressed his gratitude to the local community:

“In this tragedy, many of our staff lost their homes, including family members. We cannot bring back those who were lost, but we wanted to give our support to the communities and our team who have been directly affected by standing alongside them. We would like to say a huge thank you to all our customers who came to dine with us to support the Nepal Flood Relief Fundraising and stand with us in this difficult time. We also express our deepest gratitude to our entire team for volunteering their time and for their incredible hard work and dedication.”

Out of the funds raised, £1,000 has already been distributed directly to the families of affected staff members, while the remaining balance is being directed to local organisations delivering on-the-ground relief in the Rasuwa district.

The restaurant confirmed it will share updates on the relief work once further details arrive from the field. Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact the restaurant team directly on 01704 512345 or via email at greathimalayas1177@gmail.com
