Christ Church on Lord Street, Southport, is set to welcome back music lovers tomorrow as the popular Midweek Music series returns for its Autumn term.
Running every Wednesday from 16 September through to 9 December, the free lunchtime performances offer a regular spot of culture right in the heart of Southport. Each concert starts at 1:00 pm and lasts around 45 minutes, making it an easy addition to a lunch break or an afternoon out in town.
The long-running initiative has grown significantly since launching when the new church opened back in 1995. What started with modest crowds of around 30 people now regularly draws audiences of 150. A big part of that success comes down to the warm atmosphere created by local church volunteers, alongside the high standard of talent on display.
Organisers draw their inspiration for the event from a passage in Paul’s letter to the Philippians, which encourages people to focus on things that are “excellent or praiseworthy”.
The sentiment is shared by regular attendees. Joan, a Friend of Midweek Music, said: “Thank you for the wonderful Midweek concerts you have provided for us this year. This is a wonderful church with everyone making us so welcome and Wednesdays have become the highlight of our week.”
The upcoming Autumn schedule brings together a mix of seasoned local performers, visiting artists from across the UK and overseas, and rising stars from top regional institutions including Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and Chetham’s School of Music.
