Waterloo’s Plaza Community Cinema is marking a major milestone for its popular retro film series this month, with a special five-year anniversary screening of 80s classic The Goonies.
Taking place on Saturday 12th September, the evening celebrates five years of the volunteer-run venue’s ‘Plaza 80s’ strand, bringing Richard Donner’s beloved 1985 adventure back to the big screen alongside a live DJ set from Nick Gartland.
We spoke to Nick about the success of the night so far.
“I’ve always loved 80s films and 80s music, so Plaza 80s was a chance to combine the two and make a proper night of it – watch a classic film on the big screen, play some great 80s music beforehand and enjoy a pint at the same time.
“It’s hard to believe we’ve been doing it for five years now. We’ve had some brilliant nights and shown some great films, and the support we’ve had has been fantastic. The Goonies feels like the perfect film to celebrate the anniversary with and hopefully we’ll be doing these nights for many more years to come.
“I love seeing people enjoy themselves and when they get up to dance just before the film comes on is boss!”

What to expect
Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Ke Huy Quan, the cult favourite follows a group of young misfits who discover an old pirate map in an attic and set off to find the hidden treasure of One-Eyed Willy to save their homes from foreclosure.
Doors open at 6:45pm, with Nick spinning classic tracks from the decade at 7:00pm before the film starts at 8:00pm. A licensed bar will also be open on the night.
