Plaza Cinema hosts special ‘Lavender Nights’ queer film screening

Waterloo’s Plaza Community Cinema is partnering with local group Lavender Nights to host a special “Queer Film Night” tomorrow, Thursday, July 9.

The community-run cinema will be screening the historical romantic drama Portrait of a Lady on Fire. The event aims to bring award-winning independent cinema to Sefton audiences for a dedicated evening of inclusive film.

Set in late 18th-century France on an isolated island in Brittany, the film follows a female painter who is secretly commissioned to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman. An unexpected and intense romance quickly develops between the two women.

Directed by Céline Sciamma, the film made history at the Cannes Film Festival as the first movie directed by a woman to win the prestigious Queer Palm award.
