Work is now officially underway at Southport Pier, marking the first visible progress residents will have seen in months. Anyone passing the seafront over the next few weeks will notice increased activity as contractors begin preparing the site for major restoration tasks.
Sefton Council Leader Cllr Marion Atkinson has shared an on‑site update confirming that the next phase of works has started. Civil engineering specialists A.E. Yates are already on location, setting up for the structural work ahead.
What Residents Will See Next
The council has outlined what locals can expect throughout the summer:
- Increased on‑site movement — More contractor vehicles, equipment and workers will be visible over the next couple of weeks as preparations ramp up.
- Dismantling work starting in July — Key sections of the pier will begin to be dismantled to allow the restoration to progress safely and efficiently.
Why the Pier Has Been Closed
Southport Pier has remained shut since December 2022 due to significant safety concerns involving the timber decking and steelwork. Standing in front of the new hoardings, Cllr Atkinson reaffirmed the council’s commitment:
“We promised… we would bring our fantastic, beautiful pier back, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
