The Plaza Cinema and the Waterloo Partnership are bringing Elvis Presley back to the big screen this August with a special fundraising screening of King Creole as part of their ‘Remembering the King’ event.
Taking place tonight, Tuesday, 18 August, at 7:30pm the evening features the classic film alongside live music from Leslie Longley, a raffle, and a licensed bar, with all proceeds supporting charity work in West Africa.
King Creole follows Danny Fisher, a young delinquent who drops out of high school and quits his job as a nightclub busboy. When he gets his big break performing on stage, local crime boss Maxie Fields tries to pressure him into singing at his own club, The Blue Room. Danny refuses, setting off a dangerous confrontation as Fields refuses to take no for an answer.
Tickets cost just £5, with all proceeds from the evening going directly to the Waterloo Partnership. Founded in 2005 by volunteers from Waterloo and Crosby following a parliamentary delegation to Sierra Leone, the Merseyside charity supports sustainable community projects in its namesake town of Waterloo, Sierra Leone.
Over the last two decades, the charity has helped build school classrooms, toilets, and wells, provided medical supplies and malaria treatment, supplied tools for local farmers, and supported education for vulnerable children. Projects are identified and managed by a local committee in Sierra Leone to ensure help goes directly where it is needed most.
