Established last year, the Water Wombles are part of a joint initiative between the L20 Hub and the Canal and River Trust that get together every fortnight to help keep our waterways clean.
The group meet at the Lock and Quay, Bootle, going out on rafted canoes to tackle litter and invasive Pennywort, responsible for swamping waterways, blocking water flow, crowding out native plants and taking oxygen from fish and insects.
Organisers at the L20 Hub said: “The Canal & River trust is a charity and works hard to maintain our water ways for our leisure and enjoyment. Here at The L20 Hub we use the canal to run our paddle sessions for young people, families as well as the wider community. The Canal & River Trust also made it possible for us to gain our Paddle Instructor qualifications so that we can offer our paddle sessions to the community free or heavily subsidised.
“If you have time and would like to join us and Rob on a mini mission to clear up our canals, nurture the wildlife and the ecosystem right on our doorstep then get yourself signed up! We will be going out on rafted canoes which are stable and virtually impossible to capsize, so unless you jump in there is no need to worry about falling in the canal! However if you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.”
For those happier volunteering on dry land they are also running Tow Path and Blue Space Clean Ups. These sessions are designed to be suitable for all. They will be scouring the tow paths, bridges and surrounding blue spaces while our Water Wombles take to the water on rafted canoes to help clean up our community’s much loved and used canal spaces.
To sign up for any of the sessions in April to August visit: www.bookwhen.com/l20community
Volunteers are advised to bring a waterproof jacket and wear comfortable clothing (be sure to bring a hat or a jumper just in case you feel the chill!). You won’t be going in the canal but you may get splashed when pulling plants or litter out of the water! Buoyancy aids and gloves will be provided.
