Become a Friend of Crosby Beach

Do you enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Crosby seafront? Are you shocked at the amount of litter left behind by visitors to this popular tourist attraction, along the paths, on the beach and dunes?

Are you worried about the danger litter poses to the range of wildlife? If you are then you can do something positive about it and come along to The Friends of Crosby Beach clean-up sessions this summer.

Summer dates:

  • 14 June 2026
  • 12 July 2026
  • 9 August 2026

What to expect on the day:

Beach cleaning is a fun, educational, and relaxing way to enjoy the fresh air while helping the environment. Here is what you can expect during a typical session.

How Sessions Are Run

  • When: Sessions take place once a month on a Sunday morning from 10:30 am to 12:15 pm (see dates above).
  • Where: Meet at the equipment stall on the promenade below Crosby Baths (Mariners Road entry). If it is raining, the meet-up moves under the canopy of the Baths.
  • Weather Cancellations: If there is heavy rain or high winds, the session will be cancelled for safety. Cancellations are announced on the group’s Facebook page.

The 4 Steps of the Session

  • Step 1: Signing-In
    • Provide your first name so organisers know you have returned safely at the end.
    • State how many adults and under-18s are in your group.
    • Decide on photo consent for social media and local press. If you decline, you will wear a specific color Hi-Vis vest so photographers know to leave you out of photos.
  • Step 2: Getting Your Equipment
    • Yellow Hi-Vis Vest: Required for your safety so heavy machinery operators on the beach can see you.
    • Gloves: Provided to protect your hands when pulling rubbish out of the sand, though you can bring your own.
    • Litter-Picker, Bag Hoop, and Bin Bags: Available for both adults and children. Organizers will show you how to use them if it is your first time.
  • Step 3: Health and Safety Brief
    • First-time volunteers will receive a quick briefing on beach safety, including what is safe to pick up and what to avoid. Safety guidelines are also displayed on the railings.
  • Step 4: You Are Ready to Go!
    • Once equipped and briefed, you can head out onto the beach.

Important Dos and Don’ts

  • DO NOT walk into muddy areas exposed by the low tide, as it is easy to get stuck.
  • DO head out while the tide is moving away (receding) so you do not get cut off by incoming water.
  • DO wear appropriate clothing for the weather (warm/waterproofs for cold days, or sun protection and sunglasses for sunny days).
  • DO wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear to protect your feet from hidden hazards like broken glass or metal grills.
