The charming village of Churchtown is packed with history. The original market cross (now at Meols Hall) was erected on the village green and the present obelisk was moved here in the 1950s. The famous Botanic Gardens were at one time the terminus for the Southport tram system, there is still a large turning circle at the front of the gardens.
It is a designated conservation area and for this reason, the centre of the old village retains much of its character from bygone times – with the green in front of St. Cuthbert’s Church flanked by two local pubs, and the entrance to Meols Hall opposite. The historic buildings range from half timbered, white-washed cottages with traditional thatch to large gothic-style, red brick semis, with sloping roofs and coats of arms.
Today, Botanic Gardens is maintained with the help of a group of volunteers who spend painstaking hours planting the flower beds to create wonderful displays for visitors to admire.
If you wander down Botanic Road, the heart of Churchtown village, you will come across an array of bars, restaurants and cafés (for both humans and dogs) – you will be spoilt for choice!
The selection of independent businesses include gift shops, specialist food purveyors, antique stores, a variety of salons, florists and more. The village is constantly changing and there is always something new to discover.
The chocolate shop RS Fine Chocolates is definitely a highlight, owned by master chocolatier Rob and his wife Jo who moved here from Ainsdale village in 2020. Not only do they sell a vast range of handcrafted chocolates, they also have an upstairs lounge and an outside courtyard where you can relax with a warm drink or a tub of ice cream.

Just next door is Lancashire Makers, the gallery shop, which features a diverse range of inspiring arts and crafts including textiles, ceramics, glass, jewellery, fine art, photography and turned wood. The company is non profit making – enabling participating makers to sell competitively and directly to their audience.
Churchtown Deli is a locally influenced deli and the perfect place to stop off on your way to the Botanic Gardens for a picnic. Gilly, the owner of over four years, is proud to stock a selection of beer from Southport Brewery, Churchtown Cheddar and Forgan 42 gin which is distilled in nearby Banks. They also host regular cheese and wine tasting evenings, plus gin cocktail nights.
Angels of Churchtown is an absolute treasure trove of gifts and has been part of the village for 13 years. The owner Liz opened the shop after retiring from the NHS and hasn’t looked back. With brands like Joma Jewellery, Powder and Katie Loxton accessories, Cornishware and The Outrageous Peacock vegan candles and melts, you are sure to find the perfect present for someone special.
