Almost hidden behind a long hedge on Buckley Hill Lane, near Netherton, sits an oasis of calm.
Home to over 30 rescue horses, Shy Lowen Horse and Pony Sanctuary has become an important part of the local community since opening its gates back in November 1999.
Created and run by Bernadette and Eric Langfield, with a team of dedicated volunteers, the organisation has helped thousands of local children and adults with therapeutic and recreational activities on-site.
We spoke to Bernadette about future plans and upcoming activities at the centre for local residents and visitors to enjoy:
“One of the things we do is provide horse riding opportunities and therapy opportunities for people. The weather makes it difficult sometimes – even when it’s sunny – so we need to put a roof over our all-weather surface. That way, when it’s too sunny, it’s shaded, and when it’s wet, it’s sheltered.
“We’ve been raising money for this for just over a year, and we’re £11,600 short of our target of £44,300. We need to raise the rest of that money so that we can put the roof on. We’ve called the project ‘Put a Lid On It’ because that’s what we do in Liverpool, we put lids on things that need them, and our fundraising activities are helping us get there.
“On the 13th of September, you can come to the centre for the Equestrian World Cup Experience, which marries the love of Football on Merseyside and the love of horses at Shy Lowen.
“While you’re here, you can meet all the horses, have some pony rides, get something off the barbecue, and try Betty’s homemade cakes – they’re famous around here. It’s a lovely family day for hardly any cost, and it helps the world be a better place.”
