This Month at The Plaza

The Plaza Community Cinema in Waterloo has lined up a varied selection of screenings and special events throughout August 2026, ranging from cult cinema classics and concert performances to independent local film screenings with guest Q&As.

Blue Velvet (18)

Kickstarting the month’s Moviedrome series dedicated to cult classics, David Lynch’s acclaimed 1986 mystery thriller Blue Velvet screens tonight. Starring Kyle MacLachlan, Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, and Laura Dern, the film follows a young man who uncovers a dark criminal underworld lurking beneath the quiet surface of his suburban hometown.

Screening Details: Screen 1 in 4K

Michael Mann’s seminal 1995 crime epic Heat returns to Screen 1 in a restored 4K presentation. Starring Al Pacino as obsessive LAPD detective Vincent Hanna and Robert De Niro as master thief Neil McCauley, the film is renowned for its intense cat-and-mouse tension, iconic central diner dialogue, and acclaimed Los Angeles bank heist sequence. Val Kilmer co-stars.

André Rieu’s 2026 Summer Concert: Viva Maastricht!

Date: Sunday 9th August

Time: 2:00 pm

Violinist and conductor André Rieu returns to the screen alongside his Johann Strauss Orchestra for his annual summer concert event, recorded live in his hometown of Maastricht, Netherlands. Viva Maastricht! brings classical waltzes, popular melodies, and showstopping performances to local cinema audiences this weekend.

Algorithm Party: Screening + Q&A

Date: Thursday 13th August

Time: 8.00pm

Independent documentary Algorithm Party, starring ROY (PJ Smith) and directed by Roy Boulter, arrives at the Plaza for a special event featuring a live Q&A session following the feature. Presented by Hurricane Films and The Institute for Creative Enterprise, the documentary offers a distinct look into contemporary digital culture and music. The film arrives in Sefton following festival recognition, including an Honorable Mention at the Mannheim Arts and Film Festival 2024, Official Selection at the 36th Girona Film Festival 2024, and a Best Documentary Film Nomination at the Little Venice Film Festival 2026.

King Creole (PG)

Date: Tuesday 18th August

Time: 7.30pm

Elvis Presley stars in Michael Curtiz’s classic 1958 musical drama King Creole. Set in the nightspots of New Orleans, Presley plays Danny Fisher, a troubled young singer who gets drawn into the criminal underworld run by a local mob boss. Featuring popular tracks such as Hard Headed Woman and the title song King Creole, it remains widely regarded as one of Presley’s finest dramatic screen performances.
