The future of Southport Pier has been secured with the approval of a massive £20 million restoration project. As the second-longest pier in the country and a Grade II listed treasure, the pier is more than just a walkway – it’s a symbol of Southport’s Victorian heritage and a centrepiece of our community.
The pier has an unfortunate legacy of poor workmanship resulting from a refurbishment in 2000 and was further damaged during sustained freezing conditions, leading to its closure at the end of 2022. This ambitious project will now focus on replacing the wooden decking and structural steelwork, ensuring the pier remains safe for future generations.
Cllr Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “We have worked tirelessly to make the strongest possible case for this investment, and I am delighted that Government recognises both the importance of Southport Pier and the urgency of its restoration. As I have said many times, we were ready to begin works the moment funding was confirmed—and now we can. This is a vital milestone in safeguarding one of our most cherished heritage assets.”
With funding now secured, preparations will begin immediately to finalise the construction programme – so that work can get underway as soon as possible.
This restoration isn’t just about fixing the past, it’s about ensuring the pier remains a vibrant part of our future. It’s a huge boost for local tourism and a point of pride for Sefton residents who have walked those boards for generations. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the progress as this iconic landmark is returned to its full, historic glory.
